Dr. Faye J. WilsonQuality management consultant, collegiate women’s basketball official and 1980 ϲͼ alumna Dr. Faye J. Wilson, RN, CPHQ, FNAHQ will deliver the keynote address during the School of Nursing and Allied Health’s summer nursing pinning ceremony. The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, July 26 at 3:00 p.m. in the University Chapel.

During the ceremony, nursing education majors who have completed coursework requirements and internships will take the oath of the nursing profession. They will formally receive their degrees at the university’s annual Summer Commencement Exercises on Friday, July 27.

Wilson, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, graduated from Tuskegee with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She continued her studies and earned a dual master’s degree in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of Alabama. She later earned a doctorate in health and human service from Columbia Commonwealth. In addition to being a registered nurse, Wilson is a certified professional in healthcare quality (CPHQ) and a fellow of the National Association for Healthcare Quality (FNAHQ).

Wilson has garnered extensive experience in quality management. Currently, she owns and operates Birmingham-based Wilson Quality Consulting LLC, an independent consulting firm that focuses on quality and performance standards for healthcare systems, external peer reviews, policy/leadership development, accreditation/certification, and creating healthier communities. In this role, she has traveled to China and across America providing sound quality initiatives for healthcare organizations, corporate agencies and creating healthier communities using her “GEE” (guide, energize and excite) model for effective change.

In addition to her consultancy career, which has spanned nearly two decades, Wilson served previously as the assistant director of quality for the Jefferson County (Alabama) Department of Health. There, she established and led accreditation teams in preparation for Joint Commission Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Currently, in addition to her full-time consultancy work, Wilson works part-time as a registered nurse in UAB Medicine Center’s addiction recovery unit.

Wilson puts her focus on health and physical activity into practice on the basketball court as a women’s basketball official for both the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). She was the first female in Alabama to officiate a women’s basketball game for either conference, as well as the first African-American female to officiate a high school final four basketball game in Alabama. In 2014, she was inducted into the Central Alabama Amateur Softball Hall of Fame.

Wilson is a member of several professional organizations — including the National Association for Healthcare Quality, for which she was the first and only African-American to hold the position of national president, and the Alabama Association for Healthcare Quality, for which she served previously as state president.  She is a published author and has produced content for books, journals and articles on quality management.
