In June, ϲͼ welcomed two new members to its Board of Trustees: Tamika Tremaglio of Deloitte and Dr. Arthur Tipton of Southern Research.

Tremaglio, Greater Washington managing principal, Deloitte, has been selected by the Board of Trustees to serve through March 2020. A principal in Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP, she serves as Deloitte Advisory’s East Region managing principal in addition to her Greater Washington managing principal role. Her professional experience, which spans more than 20 years, includes leading forensic accounting matters and has benefited from her academic focus on business administration, as well as her law degree from the University of Maryland’s School of Law.

Outside her career responsibilities, Tremaglio is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and serves in board capacities for the Women’s National Basketball Players Association Foundation, National Aquarium Baltimore, University of Maryland School of Law, and the National Bar Association — among others. In addition to her law degree, she has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Mount St. Mary’s University, and an MBA from the University of Baltimore’s Merrick School of Business.

Tipton was appointed by then-Gov. Robert Bentley to serve the unexpired term of Trustee Andy Hornsby from March to June 2017, and then a full, state-appointed four-year term until June 2021. He is president and CEO of Birmingham-based Southern Research, a nonprofit organization with 500 scientists and engineers whose work spans new drug treatments for various diseases, including cancer; new medical devices; manned missions to Mars; cleaner air and water on Earth; and the safety of military servicemen and servicewomen. The firm’s work includes partnerships with the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Energy, NASA, hospitals, major aerospace firms, utility companies, and other private and government organizations.

Prior to Southern Research, he worked in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries for 25 years, participating in the growth aspects of three start-up companies — one that went public and two acquired by public companies. Tipton has 42 issued U.S. patents, 30 published U.S. patent applications, and numerous foreign equivalents, with more than 70 presentations and publications. He earned a doctorate in polymer science and engineering from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, and a bachelor of science in chemistry from Spring Hill College.

“Tamika and Art will be wonderful additions to the Board of Trustees,” said John E. Page, chairman of the Board of Trustees. “Respectively, they bring a wealth of knowledge in fiscal management and research innovation — two areas that I believe will enhance the university’s operations and entrepreneurialism.”

The ϲͼ Board of Trustees serves as the university’s governing and fiduciary body. Its responsibilities include providing university oversight through its president, as well as helping to advance its engagement with students, parents, alumni and philanthropic donors. The board is comprised of up to 25 voting members, which includes five trustees appointed by Alabama’s governor. Board-appointed trustees serve for three years; state-appointed trustees for four years. In addition to the 25 voting trustees, there are several non-voting ex officio members, which include the university’s president, a faculty trustee who is the faculty senate chair, a student trustee elected by the student body, and Alabama’s state superintendent of education.
