ϲͼ students joined forces with their peers at five other area colleges and universities on Thursday, Sept. 6 to support the River Region United Way’s inaugural phone-a-thon. The event was to enhance the nonprofit organization’s efforts to raise funds to address a variety of community needs throughout its five-county service area, which includes Macon County.
Members of the university’s Royal Court staffed telephones and called potential area donors throughout the evening. The gathering featured university students, leaders and administrators from Alabama State University, Auburn University at Montgomery, Faulkner University, Huntingdon College, Troy University at Montgomery and ϲͼ.
The inaugural phone-a-thon is the culmination of the United Way’s newly minted Colleges and Universities Committee. The committee is comprised of volunteers committed to supporting education through student volunteerism and professional development opportunities for United Way volunteers.
“This is an exciting new initiative that leverages support of area colleges and engages college students in a partnership that benefits our entire River Region,” said 2018 Campaign Chair Ed Crowell, a retired U.S. Air Force brigadier general.
Through the phone-a-thon, student volunteers called United Way donors to thank them for their previous support and to appeal to them for a donation to its current fundraising campaign. Funds raised through the 2018 phone-a-thon are part of United Way’s 2018 Campaign, which directly enhances the lives of nearly 135,000 people served by the River Region United Way and its 40-plus affiliate agencies in Autauga, Elmore, Lowndes, Macon and Montgomery counties.
The River Region United Way advances the common good by uniting volunteers, donors and community partners to improve the quality of life in the River Region. Its focus is on health, education and financial stability, because these are the building blocks for a good quality of life. For more information about the United Way and its 2018 campaign, visit .
