°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êͼ¹ÒÅÆ tops Washington Monthly’s education ranking list

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (August 29, 2011) — Washington Monthly, a non-profit publication that focuses on U.S. government and politics, named °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êͼ¹ÒÅÆ No. 1 in its national ranking of the top 50 baccalaureate colleges. The publication evaluated the schools based on service, social mobility and research categories. The service criterion was determined by factors such as student participation in ROTC and Peace Corps programs and percentage of federal work-study funds spent on service.

Of all the institutions, Tuskegee ranked second in ROTC participation. Social mobility was gauged by factors such as the number of students with Pell Grants and graduation percentage. According to the publication, 67 percent of Tuskegee’s students are Pell Grant recipients and the university’s graduation rate was 7 percent higher than predicted.

Tuskegee topped the research category. According to the magazine, Tuskegee spent more than $14 million in research. The magazine also ranked the university 21st in the percentage of graduates who pursue Ph.D. degrees.
