Department of Modern Languages, Communication and Philosophy
Mission Statement
Through its commitment to exemplary teaching, research, and service, the Department of Modern Languages, Communication, and Philosophy will provide a well-structured curriculum encompassing core courses in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and natural sciences and major courses in advanced composition, literature from diverse traditions, language, and communication. It will explore innovative approaches to teaching and learning, encourage and support professional development, and expand the faculty to reflect trends and developments in the discipline. It will maintain an environment that nurtures intellectual growth and prepares students for lifelong learning.
Vision Statement
The department is dedicated to helping students acquire (1) a broad knowledge of English, American, and world literature; (2) a deep appreciation of literature as an avenue to a more expansive vision of the human condition; and (3) the analytical and communication skills that will enable them to succeed in graduate studies and/or professional responsibilities.

Scholarships in English
The Alvin R. Blount Scholarship ($1000):
The Alvin R. Blount Scholarship in memory of Myrtle T. Blount is valued at $1,000. This generous scholarship, established in 2012, was designed to assist high-achieving students majoring in English. Dr. Eleanor Blount, retired Associate Professor of English, served 澳门六合彩图挂牌 from 2010 until 2018, and the scholarship is financed by her brother Alvin R. Dr. Loretta S. Burns Scholarship Award ($500):
This annual scholarship is established in honor of Dr. Loretta S. Burns, Professor of English and Department Chair, who served her alma mater with distinction for four decades and retired on June 30, 2016. It provides financial support to students majoring in English and Communication who have demonstrated excellence in these subjects.

The Department of English sponsors four organizations:

Membership in the English Club is open to any student interested in literature, theatre, art, music or film. Membership in Lambda Iota Tau Honor Society is open to junior and senior English majors or minors with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and a GPA of at least 3.0 in literature courses. Membership in the French Club is open to students enrolled in French classes or students interested in French and Francophone cultures. Membership in the Spanish Club is open to students enrolled in Spanish classes or students interested in Hispanic cultures.
The English Department head is the advisor for Beta Tau Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society. Alpha Kappa Mu is a general scholarship organization open to juniors and seniors in all academic disciplines. To be eligible for membership, a student must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3.
