Shelter Medicine

1. We routinely visit local contracted animal shelters where we provide the following services:

* Vaccinate as requested

* Review all animals’ health

* Diagnose to determine what can be treated (on-site) at the shelter and what needs to be brought into the Small Animal Hospital for diagnosis and treatment.

2. Animal requiring spray or neuter are brought into the clinic for treatment procedures. The surgery is done by senior students (under faculty supervision) and returned to the shelter the next morning. Carcasses of deceased animals are brought into School of Veterinary Medicine Pathology Department for necropsy. Heads of these carcasses are used for dental lab specimens.

2a. Expired animals are used to provide valuable training opportunities for our students during the pathobiology and dental lab rotations.
